Boxing shoes take a beating from sweat, gym floors and constant pivoting. A few minutes of care after training keeps them grippy, fresh and in shape for much longer.
After every session
- Take them off the floor straight away. Don't leave them in a closed gym bag.
- Loosen the laces and open the tongue so air can reach the inside.
- Remove the insole if it comes out, and let both dry separately.
- Air-dry at room temperature. Stuffing them with newspaper helps absorb moisture and hold the shape.
How to clean boxing shoes
- Knock off dust and brush the sole with a soft brush.
- Mix lukewarm water with a little mild soap.
- Wipe the upper gently with a soft cloth or sponge. For mesh and knit uppers, use light dabbing rather than scrubbing.
- For leather or synthetic leather panels (such as on Winning and Mizuno shoes), use a damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Wipe away soap with a clean damp cloth and air-dry.
What not to do
- No washing machine. It can break down glue, foam and the sole.
- No radiators, heaters or hairdryers. Direct heat can warp the sole and crack leather.
- No harsh chemicals or bleach.
- Don't wear them outside. Street use wears down the thin, grippy sole fast.
Keeping the grip
Boxing shoe soles are thin rubber designed for clean canvas and gym floors. Wipe the sole with a damp cloth before training to remove dust – it makes a big difference to grip.
Fighting odour
Dry them fully after every session, wear clean socks and rotate between two pairs if you train daily.
